Governor-elect of Yucatan, Mauricio Vila Dosal, demanded five stations for the Maya Train project within the state of Yucatán. This new railroad mega-project that will connect 5 states in southeast Mexico, with cargo and passengers, will boost tourism activity and the region’s economy.

The agreement was taken during the meeting held on Sunday Sep. 9 in Palenque, Chiapas, which was headed by President-elect Andrés Manuel López Obrador, and attended by governors and representatives of the five states involved.

The five stations in the state of Yucatan will be: Valladolid, Chichén Itzá, Izamal, Mérida and Maxcanú-Uxmal, which would trigger employment and economic, tourism and social development for these municipalities in a significant way.

In this aspect it was agreed that the environmental studies will be paid by each of the states, taking into account the impact that this project will have for the region.

Vila Dosal is demanding the inclusion of the state of Yucatán in the route, which was not contemplated in the initial project. The governor-elect of Yucatan expressed his appreciation for the opening shown by Andrés Manuel López Obrador, to listen and accept the proposal of the Cancún-Valladolid-Chichén-Izamal- Mérida-Uxmal-Campeche as part of the project, and consider the “mixed used” (passengers and cargo).

“The tourist and cultural promotion of Yucatan and the different destinations of the Maya World deserve that a project of this nature is exploited to the maximum to compete successfully in the global market and put us at the forefront of tourist services. In Yucatan we have entrepreneurs, merchants and industrialists with a lot of initiative and experience to enrich this proposal, so that the stations that are built are cutting-edge and attract more tourism and more investment for the state, which would generate jobs for the benefit of all Yucatecans ” added the governor-elect.

Mauricio Vila pointed out that it will be necessary for the development of the project to consider the inclusion of social and economic benefits for the municipalities and neighboring communities in each station.
