“The driver of a personal watercraft (waverunner) could’ve caused an accident by recklessly entering a tourist swimming, area in which this type of vehicles are forbidden”, authorities said.

In an information card, it was announced that as part of the prevention and surveillance work carried out by the staff of the Directorate of Civil Protection and Firefighters of Isla Mujeres, in coordination with lifeguards and the Port Captaincy, a “wave-runner” was seized, as it was sailing inside the swimming area in Playa Norte.

In this regard, Merced Ortiz Maya, director of Civil Protection and Firefighters, announced that this vehicle put at risk the physical integrity of bathers who were enjoying a pleasant moment in the said beach area, and therefore it had be confiscated and the driver fined.

“We had to secure the vehicle, since it was navigating in an area that can only be used by swimmers and continue to offer visitors and locals the security they deserve while visiting our beaches,” said the director.
