Unappreciated in Cancun, 70,000 condoms are headed for Playa del Carmen

CANCÚN — Despite the announcement made by the Red Positiva Cancun organization that they would distribute about 70,000 condoms on different beaches in Cancun, taking advantage of the presence of “springbreakers” mainly in the area of discos, this action will have to be held in Playa del Carmen, due to lack of support in the municipality of Benito Juarez.

The goal, said Roberto Guzman, director of Red Positiva, is to provide tools to young tourists, springbreakers who arrive at this time of year to enjoy the destination (but are also known for high alcohol consumption and even drugs during their holidays), in order to prevent sexually transmitted diseases, mainly HIV-AIDS and syphilis.

In addition, Red Positiva intended to install some modules to proceed with rapid tests for both diseases, but could not obtain the permits from the Federal Maritime Land Zone (Zofemat) or from Commerce in the Public Road.

“We needed those permits to have no problem at the time of installing the module or delivering the condoms, but nobody supported us, including Zofemat refused to permit to do it on beaches,” Guzman lamented.

And he recalled that because of the changes regarding the law against human trafficking, the distribution of these condoms could be misunderstood and lead to severe charges.

That is why they decided to do the paperwork directly in the hotels in the Riviera Maya, where they had an immediate response and will be stationed starting this week when the delivery of condoms begins, as well as the placement of modules for rapid tests.
