Spirit Airlines will fly new Cleveland-to-Cancun route, starting in February

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Spirit Airlines is adding its first international destination from Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, flying between Cleveland and Cancun, Mexico, starting in February.

The route will operate year-round four days per week — Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, starting Feb. 14.

Spirit will have some competition on the route. Frontier Airlines, another low-cost carrier, flies between Cleveland and Cancun, three times per week.

United Airlines, too, has flown nonstop between Cleveland and Cancun, as recently as August, although the route is not currently in United’s schedule for late 2019 or early 2020.

Cancun is the 12th destination for Spirit from Cleveland, and the first outside the United States. The carrier, known for its low fares and extra fees, also flies to Atlanta, Boston, Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, New Orleans, Orlando, Myrtle Beach, Tampa and Dallas.

The Cancun flight will operate with a 182-seat Airbus A320. Cleveland departures will leave at 9:34 a.m., arriving in Cancun at 1:24 p.m. Cancun departures will leave at 2:20 p.m., arriving in Cleveland at 6:06 p.m.

The new Cleveland service was part of a larger announcement for Spirit. The carrier also announced new service between Cancun and Pittsburgh, Austin, Nashville and Philadelphia.
