Vacationers to Mexico are getting another option for flying out of Columbus.

According to The Business Journals, Southwest Airlines said as part of a nationwide service expansion that it would add seasonal flights to the beach resort of Cancun directly from John Glenn Columbus International Airport.

The Southwest flights will begin April 14, pending regulatory approvals. They would fly on Saturdays to and from Cancun. The airline didn’t say when the seasonal service would end.

The Southwest website shows a nonstop flight starting next April departing Columbus at 7:45 a.m. and arriving 3 1/2 hours later in Cancun. Prices start at $169 one-way.

No airline flies a regular route between John Glenn International and Mexico although two other airlines, Delta and Vacation Express, also offer seasonal service to Cancun.

Airport officials said about 72 passengers a day travel each way between Columbus and Cancun, with demand growing by nearly 50 percent over the last five years.

As part of Southwest’s route expansion, it’s also adding seasonal service between Cancun and New Orleans.

Southwest this spring began flying between John Glenn International and Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport on Sundays.
