The former governor’s names “Roberto Borge Angulo” and “Félix González Canto” were erased from the Flag’s Monument shaped like an obelisk in Chetumal, capital city of the state of Quintana Roo.

In a statement, the Office of the Mayor of Chetumal reported that it was determined to return the obelisk to the original content, in order to request its registration within the Public Registry of Monuments and Archaeological and Historical Zones of the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH).

He explained that this action is part of an extensive program of conservation, rescue and preservation of all emblematic and historical sites and monuments that are cultural reference in Quintana Roo’s identity.

It was Borge’s idea to immortalize his own name on the monument

The names, elaborated with metallic letters, were allocated on the monument, next to the Government Palace in 2015 during the administration of the former governor Roberto Borge Angulo.

Borge himself came up with the idea of engraving the governor’s names on the surface of the obelisk.

The monument was supposed to be especially dedicated to the homeland’s defense, that’s exactly why municipal authorities insisted on putting it back to its original condition.
