On February 20 Puerto Morelos’ municipal president Laura Fernandez Piña welcomed 60 students of the school ship “Sorlandet”, who arrived at this destination in which they will stay until next February 25, as part of their tour of more than 20 countries around the world.

During the formal ceremony held at the facilities of the fiscal dock of the Integral Port Administration of Quintana Roo (Apiqroo), the first mayor spoke in English and Spanish to the highschool students, and said that this paradise, which is a small corner of Mexico in the Caribbean, receives them with open arms.

Also, the Municipal President asked the students, who came from Norway, China, the United States, Colombia and Mexico, to be spokespersons in their places of residence of the beauties offered by the charming village of Perto Morelos, which is also the youngest municipality in the state of  Quintana Roo.

It is worth mentioning that the 60 students and the 20 crew members, including the teachers, left Norway in the first week of October aboard the “Sorlandet”, built at the Hoivolds Mek shipyard. Verksted, in Krisitiansand Netherlands,  – its port of registration – and which entered service in 1927 as a pure sailing vessel rigged with a three-masted frigate.

The vessel, owned by the Norwegian Ministry of Culture, is 57 meters long and 8.90 meters wide. It arrived to Puerto Morelos from Spain and will set out next to Cuba.

In her speech, María Andreína Mora Bello, representative of the school ship, thanked the authorities for the warm reception. “Puerto Morelos is the first port of the new continent that opens the door for us and gives us the opportunity to make cultural globalization a reality” she said.

During the following days the students will have the opportunity, both on board and on land, to meet some of puerto Morelos residents and exchange experiences.

The event was also attended by Captain José Guillermo Sandoval Valcarcel, representing the 5th Naval Region; Captain Carlos Humberto Carrillo Ufort, from the local Port Authority; municipal officials and special guests.
