Puerto Morelos and Medellín to become “Sister Cities”
PUERTO MORELOS, QUINTANA ROO.- The municipal president of Puerto Morelos, Laura Fernandez Piña and authorities of Medellin, Colombia, conducted a meeting to agree on details for the next twinning of both destinations, which will bring benefits to both cities in exchange of successful government experiences, as well as a greater approach in matters of culture and tourism.
Laura Fernández received the visit of Ricardo Yepes Pérez and Manuel Moreno Zapata, First Vice President and Second Vice President of the Council of Medellín, respectively.
Fernandez Piña, who is also president of the National Conference of Municipalities of Mexico (Conamm) highlighted the progress in the twinning process of these two destinations, which conversations began last year through the Directorate of Tourism.
“It will be very beneficial for the community of Puerto Morelos because the city of Medellin has many success stories that can serve as an example in the development of this municipality that is relatively young,” said the mayor.
“Puerto Morelos is very young, with just a few years of being designated as a municipality, however, it has a long history as a town and a great potential in terms of tourism”, she added.
“It is a great opportunity to learn about tourism strategies, cultural promotion and advances in education and mobility, among others,” Fernandez Piña continued.
During the reception of the honorary visitors, who also toured the facilities of the Municipal Police, other officials were present, such as the general secretary of the City Council, Miguel Ángel Zetina Cuevas, the councilor Francisco Mendoza Reyna and the municipal tourism director, Héctor Tamayo Sánchez.
The Colombian councilors received a copy of the book on the history of Puerto Morelos and thanked the warm reception, likewise they recognized the progress that this municipality has achieved in a few years, since it has been strengthened as a destination with its own identity.
For his part, the director of Tourism, Hector Tamayo, recalled that the first talks on twinning took place last year in the Tourist Caravan of Medellin, organized by the Hotel Association of Cancun and Puerto Morelos.
“At that time we carried out an intense promotional activity in that Colombian city and a meeting was held with Manuel Moreno, second vice president of the Council of Medellín; We also met with other Colombian councilors to talk about Puerto Morelos, “he said.
Manuel Moreno mentioned that Medellin is the second most populated city in Colombia, an example in mobility, in a culture of responsibility with the environment, sports, and has been awarded as the most innovative city in the world, among other recognitions.
