The Free Books initiative celebrated World Poetry Day with an open microphone on Thursday March 21st at the Callejón del Arte, where 20 playenses read different poetic creations to the listeners.

Rossy Vivanco Torres, precursor of Libre Books, invited the residents to this celebration that started at 6:30 p.m. in the aforementioned place, located in downtown Playa del Carmen.

“This time we wanted to do it in a more central place, closer to the citizens, we wanted to do it in the Callejón del Arte, on 6th Street, we registered the attendance of all kinds of people, from elementary school children, youth, poets, actors, to lawyers and accountants, then the idea is to share poetry of own authorship. We had several students who shared poems written by themselves and others who shared their favorite classic poems, “said Vivanco Torres.

The World Poetry Day was declared as such on March 21, 1999 by the United Nations Organization for Education, Science and Culture (UNESCO) and aims to support linguistic diversity through poetic expression; likewise, promote the teaching of poetry, encourage the oral tradition of poetic recitals, support small publishers, create an attractive image of poetry with the media so that it is not considered an outdated form of art.

Vivanco Torres stated that it is the second edition of the event. Last year they held it in the ground floor of the Quinta Alegría square, where around 100 people gathered, and in this 2019 edition, the number of attendees was even larger.

Rossy Vivanco is founder of Libre Books, a citizen initiative that encourages reading through the exchange of literary copies mainly.
