Cozumel, Q.R. — According to riviera-maya-news.com the Parks and Museums Foundation of Cozumel are hoping to have the Punta Sur Park environmentally certified.

The foundation, which is headed by Emilio Villanueva Sosa, has started the process. A certified park would encourage the implementation of good environmental practices of ecotourism companies in the Punta Sur Eco Tourism Park.

In a statement, Villanueva Sosa said that the foundation is working hard to obtain this certification, “Which is one of the most important in sustainable tourism because it is of great interest to implement and respect good environmental practices in a place that is characterized by its natural beauty and its fragility.”

He explained that this certification would allow the foundation to have a more efficient strategic management system and would project the state ecological reserve Laguna Colombia to another level, maintaining international quality standards with a competitive advantage in the tourist market, elevating its image domestic and foreign tourists.

Villanueva Sosa added that an efficient energy system, water quality, load capacity, eradication of the use of plastics, restriction of the use of cosmetic products, repellents and sunscreens harmful to the ecosystem, along with the training of human resources are among other conditions that must be met by the park to become certified.

Villanueva Sosa says La Fundación Parques y Museos de Cozumel is expecting their first inspection for certification by the Instituto Mexicano de Normalización y Certificación sometime in September.
