The Director of Tourism of the Solidaridad municipality, Rocío Ocampo Colmenares, informed that in 2018 German tourism could increase despite the alerts that have been issued for Playa del Carmen. This, as a consequence of the interest for cenotes generated at the ITB in Berlin.

According to the 2016 Tourist Barometer, Germany is one of the three main European markets for Riviera Maya and Playa del Carmen: with 160,000 tourists, representing 3.3% of the 4.7 million tourists that visited this destination during the year.

Spain had 161,000 and Great Britain 308,000 tourists in 2017.

The municipal official said that during the ITB in Berlin that took place from March 7 to 11, around 35,000 people attended the Playa del Carmen stand, who had positive impressions of the destination.

“German tourists always concentrate on the positive aspects of the destination they visit”, Ocampo Colmenares said.

“We have a travel guide in English with maps in German where there is information about what to do and where to go in Playa del Carmen. Germans are very interested in the cenotes and therefore we give them the location of many of them on the maps, The cultural attractions that surround the Yucatan Peninsula (archaeological sites), are also highlighted on the map. German, Polish and Italian tourists have great interest for the Maya culture,” Ocampo Colmenares concluded.
