Vancouverites will have new frequent, non-stop direct links to Mexico’s top tourist destinations starting this fall.

Mexican low-cost airline Interjet announced this week that it will be commencing year-round, four times weekly flight routes from Vancouver to Cancun and Mexico City. Both flights fly separately using an Airbus A320 aircraft with a capacity for 150 passengers.

To Cancun

Flights begin on October 26 and operate on Thursdays, Fridays, Sundays, and Mondays.

The plane departs Vancouver International Airport (YVR) at 5:50 am and lands at Cancun International Airport (CUN) at 2:05 pm. For return trips, flights leave at 4 pm and land at YVR at 8:15 pm.

One-way trips between Vancouver and the beach resort town start at only $244.

To Mexico City

Flights to Mexico City also begin on October 26, running on Thursdays, Fridays, Sundays, and Mondays.

The service leaves YVR at 10:30 pm and arrives at CUN at 5:15 am while return trips depart at 12:35 am and land at Mexico City International Airport at 4:50 am. One-way trips start at only $243.

Growing links to Mexico

“We are pleased to add Vancouver as our third destination to Canada. We believe that this beautiful city is a natural step within our coverage in this important market,” said José Luis Garza, Managing Director of Interjet, in a statement.

“Thanks to the increased interest in connectivity between the two countries, we offer this new transportation option to Canadian tourists and Mexicans who travel for business, pleasure or to study in that country.”

Passenger flows between Canada and Mexico have surged since last year when the Canadian federal government lifted the travel visa requirement for Mexican visitors to Canada.

YVR has seen over 419,000 passengers travel through Latin America during the first six months of the year, representing a 25.3% year over year increase. Moreover, the Mexican Embassy in Canada forecasts 300,000 Mexican tourists will visit Canada in 2017, with Vancouver ranking for the first time within the top 20 favourite summer vacation destinations for Mexicans.

The new Interjet service to YVR is expected to create $16.3 million in economic activity for the local economy, including 106 jobs to the BC economy and $8.6 million in GDP to the province.

A number of airlines already run flights from YVR to Cancun and Mexico City.

Airlines that fly from YVR to Cancun include Sunwing Airlines, Air Transat, and WestJet operate year-round flights while Air Canada Rouge flies to the resort town seasonally. To the Mexican capital, the list includes year-round services by Air Canada Rouge, Aeromexico, and China Southern Airlines (from Guangzhou, China with a stop at YVR).

Three days after Interjet debuts its new YVR services, WestJet will also be commencing its new weekly, non-stop route to Huatulco, Mexico.
