With an investment of 120 million pesos, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport (SINTRA) intends to build a new bicycle path in Chetumal.

According to the head of that unit, William Conrado, the route would go from the Centro de Bachilleraton Tecnológico Agrícola (CBTA) number 11, to the town of Calderitas and would be located in the central median of the  Insurgentes and Centenario avenues.

He noted that if the project and the budget are approved by the Ministry of Finance and Planning, construction work will begin in May 2019.

In relation to the use of the central ridge, he clarified that this decision is due to the fact that it is underutilized, and the avenues where the cycle path will be built feature intense vehicular traffic.

He clarified that the trees that characterize the area would be transplanted, since the intention of a bike path is to promote new patterns of healthy life.

William Conrado stressed that “with a bicycle pathway of this type, the use of bicycles will promote better health for the population, in addition to using a space that today is not utilized, like the central median of Avenida de los Insurgentes.”

He explained that the bearing surface for the path would be of asphalt durable up to ten years and that some trees would be transplanted.

He pointed out that when this work is completed, Chetumal would have two bicycle paths, since for several years an area of Bahía Boulevard has been enabled for the exclusive use of bicycles.
