Municipal crews work 24/7 to keep sargassum off the beach in Cancun

“The cleaning works carried out since June on the 13 public access beaches in Cancun, have already allowed the removal of more than 2 tons of sargassum accumulated on the coast”, said the director of Wells and Beach Cleaning, Ubaldo Alejandro Robertos Canul.

At a press conference, he explained that before the projection of the arrival of sargassum that is measured with satellite images and it is estimated that it is three times bigger than in 2015.

Robertos Canul added that the amount that was removed is equivalent to more than 2,820.50 cubic meters of seaweed, which uncharacteristically reached the coast.

He stated that the unit will not stop and will continue with constant clean up work, during the holiday season, when thousands of national tourists arrive to Cancun and the Riviera Maya.


The official underlined that this work is carried out manually and mechanically every day by a total of 112 municipal workers, organized in 14 crews of 8 members each. These men work 2 shifts a day, seven days a week, and have been able to remove seaweed off 102,943 square meters in Cancun’s 13 public beaches.
