The Chamber of Deputies approved the ruling prohibiting the use of marine mammals of any species such as whales, dolphins and manatees, in fixed or itinerant shows.

The amendment to article 60 Bis of the General Law of Wildlife was endorsed by 242 votes in favor, 190 against, and was sent to the Senate for analysis.

The ruling also seeks to prohibit any activity involving these species, with the exception of conservation-oriented research, carried out by accredited higher education institutions.

The initiative of the deputy Javier Herrera Berunda (PVEM), establishes that the marine mammal specimens that are already captive can continue in this condition, “to fulfill each and every one of the purposes for which they received the corresponding authorization, provided that their physical integrity and health are guaranteed. ”

Likewise, it prohibits the introduction of new specimens in captivity, except those resulting from the application of the protocol for care of strandings of marine mammals and those that the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) ensures.
