Mahahual beaches get a makeover for Easter holidays

CHETUMAL, Q. Roo — The arrival of gulfweed and accumulation of garbage on the beaches of Mahahual have caused the city council of the municipality of Othón P. Blanco to work on the recovery of the area’s image, prior to the holidays.

Officials undertook a working tour of Mahahual to establish actions and recover the urban image and improvement of the public services of this busy tourist destination in the southern area of Quintana Roo.

The brigades collect 18 tons of gulfweed daily, which causes bad image and unpleasant odors in the community, previous to the vacation days of Holy Week in which the tourist destination receives on average 10 trucks of tourists per day. For each two people an impact of 500 pesos is generated in food and beverages, and at least one thousand pesos, if they stay overnight.

Israel Rodríguez Aguilera, municipal technical secretary, reported that he met with José Rosas, Marcos Souza and José Villalobos, mayor and treasurer of Mahahual, and operational coordinator of Puerto Grand Maya Maya, respectively, to initiate actions and reinforce the cleaning operation program recovering the urban image, collecting organic and inorganic waste, increasing security and sanitary regulation, as well as vehicular control and roads.

He added that heavy machinery was contracted for the cleaning of buildings and lifting of the gulfweed in 2.7 kilometers of area of ​​beaches.

Jean Baptiste Manel N’tab, Director of Public Utilities, said that the Mahahual community generates six tons of garbage per day, but for holidays this amount is expected to double.

Last year’s Holy Week, hoteliers reported 100% occupancy in more than 500 rooms and community cabins and restaurateurs an 80% increase in sales.
