The first incident took place in Región 64 at around 10 o’clock, in the neighborhood known as Donceles 28, where a man was shot to death by an unknown subject; the victim died at the scene, after receiving at least one shot in the head. Less than an hour later, a call to the 911 emergency number alerted authorities again; a body was found inside a bag in a road in Region 224, close to Av. Chac Mool.

Municipal and ministerial policemen who arrived at the scene later confirmed that the body belonged to a woman; it had no clothes on and her hands and feet were bound. With these two deaths, the average number of executions in Cancun is three per week and, if this continues, 2017 could be known as the deadliest year in the history of this touristic destination.

According to SIPSE, this time last year Cancún had only 22 homicides, compared to now, where 71 people have been killed in the course of 6 months. In 2016, the total number of murders were 86, from which 62 were classified as executions, as they were related to organized crime; the other 24 were due to robbery, crimes of passion or for revenge. This first half of 2017 has already matched the total number of last year’s executions, having so far 62 deaths in the hands of organized crime. Cancún is just 15 murder victims away to surpass last year’s total homicides.
