An emblematic site under the Welcome to Cancun bridge along the Luis Donaldo Colosio Boulevard has been demolished. On Monday, the decades-old stone Casa de Los Aluxes, which sat under the bridge, was reduced to rubble.

A backhoe was used to tear down the mythical Mayan house as part of the area demolition being done for the construction of a new roadway. The stone structure, which stood several meters in height, was removed to make way for a new cloverleaf road system to the Cancun International Airport.

The cloverleaf system is part of an extensive year-long rehabilitation project of Cancun’s main vehicular artery, Luis Donaldo Colosio Boulevard. The entire Boulevard will be made over to allow better traffic flow into the Cancun Hotel Zone, the Cancun International Airport and into the central area of the city itself.

The stone house was torn down to make way for an additional two lanes of the highway, however, according to Governor Carlos Joaquin, another will eventually be built in its place.

Flor Ruiz Cosío, general secretary of the Benito Juárez City Council mentioned that the Casa de Los Aluxes structure was protected by the Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT). She said that before being demolished, as per Mayan tradition, a ceremony was held to request permission and start the project.

The stone structure was alleged to be home to aluxes, a type of sprite in the mythological tradition of the Maya peoples. It is believed that if you build them a small house, they will look after the land.
