The permit process of the ‘La Calma’ project, which would be located next to the Sea Turtle sanctuary of Xcacel-Xcacelito, has already been evaluated and a response will be provided by the local delegation of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat), so it seems like the ruling is imminent.

The above, in accordance with the record of the procedure disclosed in the list of active projects in the Semarnat Ecological Gazette, which shows that the Environmental Impact Statement (MIA) of La Calma Hotel project, was suspended due to lack of information.

The environmental organization Moce Yax Cuxtal informed that it keeps record of the Palmares del Country process, because the hotel complex is approved, it could negatively impact the nesting of the sea turtle in that coastal area of Xcacel-Xcacelito, in Tulum.

The promoter seeks to construct a building for tourist real estate purposes, in a plot which land use was changed.

Guadalupe de la Rosa Villalba, founder of Moce Yax Cuxtal, reported that they are also aware of the process recently started by the promoter, Developer of Projects SAPI, which seeks to construct a building of 14 meters high next to the public access to the beach near the CTM avenue, which registers erosion throughout the year.

In this case, Moce Yax Cuxtal will ask for a public consultation because there are alleged irregularities in the Environmental Impact Statement, so they will also look for Semarnat to hold a public meeting regarding this project.

De la Rosa Villalba mentioned that their legal team is analyzing this project’s Environmental Impact Statement and might take legal action in the coming days.

“If the project endangers the habitat of sea turtles, or the mangrove area, it must be totally canceled by the municipal and state authorities”, the environmentalist concluded.
