On Tuesday January 23, inspectors from the Federal Environmental Protection Agency (Procuraduría Federal de Protección al Ambiente: Profepa) from Playa del Carmen, conducted an operation at the coastal village of Akumal, in order to prevent tourists from entering the ocean and swim with turtles outside the allowed hours.

Tour guides from Cancun, Playa del Carmen and other points of the state, arrived on Akumal Bay Tuesday with their groups of tourists to swim with the turtles, but federal environmental inspectors did not let them get in the water, because it was already past 5 pm.

Given the dissatisfaction of the tourists, Municipal Police officers were called to escort the foreigners and their guides back to their vehicles, and told them that it is forbidden to swim with the turtles after 5 pm.

Nevertheless, several of these tour operators complained about unequal treatment, because there were other service providers that operated without being disturbed at that time.
