Cancun hosts more visitors annually than Switzerland, Egypt and India and is Mexico’s #1 destination for international travellers

Cancun, Quintana Roo now receives more international tourists than Colombia or Peru and almost the same quantity as Chile, whilst beating leading destinations in Africa, Europe and Asia.

The state of Quintana Roo receives the same number of international tourists as Brazil and Argentina combined,and more visitors than countries like Switzerland, Egypt or India, according to the Secretariat of Tourism (Sectur).

During his inauguration of the 29th edition of “Cancun’s Travel Mart Mexico Summit 2016” last week, Enrique de la Madrid Cordero confirmed that Quintana Roo has cemented its position as the preferred Mexican region for world travellers. With 13.3 million domestic and international hotel visitors, the state is ranked as the country’s number one tourism region. Here is an interesting benchmark: In 2015, the minister of tourism for Brazil, Latin America’s foremost economy, reported 6.3 million arrivals.

De la Madrid reaffirmed that Cancun is the country´s top destination for international tourists with 4 million hotel stays, and succeeds Mexico City as the second most popular destination for arrivals, registering 6.2 million visitors.

Mexico’s tourism industry generated $13,324MUSD during the first 8 months of 2016, a gain of 9.3% compared to the same period in 2015.

The statesman confirmed that between January and August, 23 million international tourists travelled to Mexico, which equates to an increase of 8.4% compared to the same period last year. Regarding hotel occupancy, he shared that from January to August the average daily occupancy was 223,773 rooms. This represents a 3% increase since 2015 and 61.5% in room occupancy.
