Climate change could cause parts of the Yucatan Peninsula to be underwater by 2050

According to a new study conducted by the organization Climate Central, as a result of climate change, rising sea levels are expected to affect cities on the west coast of Yucatán, such as Progreso, Celestún, Sisal and El Cuyo, as well as other coastal towns of the Mexican Caribbean.

The new findings indicate that by the year 2050, depending on the rise in sea level, these areas will be totally flooded every time it rains, or they will be fully submerged.

Among the sites that will also be affected is the eastern coastal region of Quintana Roo and some of its natural reserves, such as Yum Balam, Sian Ka’an and Xcalak.

Also, tourist destinations such as Holbox Island, Mahaual and the Bacalar Lagoon, along with the cities of Campeche, Champotón and Ciudad del Carmen; almost the whole northern part of Tabasco, as well as the low regions of Veracruz near Coatzacoalcos and Tlacotalpan.
