Cancún, QRoo — “The Atlante professional soccer team board initiated negotiations with the state government in order to expand the “Andrés Quintana Roo”Olympic Stadium and to fulfill the requirements specified by the Mexican Football Federation (Federación Mexicana de Futbol, FMF); aimed to achieve promotion to “Primera división” (Mexican first league, aka LIGA MX)”, informed Luis Camara Patrón, President of the “Azulgrana” club.

It is worth mentioning that Atlante is one of the most traditional and old-school football clubs in Mexico, with more than 100 years as a professional soccer team, the franchise was brought to Cancun in the late 1990s, and they became Mexico’s first division champions in 2007. However, in the following years things did not work out very good for the team and it ended up descending to “Segunda División” (aka as Liga de Ascenso), where Atlante has been stuck for the last 9 years.

In an interview with Notimex, Camara explained: “As part of the negotiations with the state government, it is intended to rebuild the track & field facilities, in response to a commitment made by Atlante executives ten years ago when the soccer team moved from Mexico City to Cancún”.

“There will be a expansion of the stadium in the number of seats, resulting in at least 20,000 more. At the same time we will take advantage of those works to replace the tartan running track”, he added.

“On the other hand, even though this team is currently well identified in the main tourist destination of Mexico and Latin America; “el Atlante” is looking for a better empathy with the people of Cancun”, underlined Camara.

“The people of Cancun need to see the team’s image everywhere, from iconic sites in town, to the media, with the purpose of creating a sense of belonging and identification with the brand” he added.

Atlante‘s minor leagues is also an important project, and a stadium in good condition is really important and absolutely basic for that matter. The soccer team can even be useful for the tourism sector” Cámara Patrón concluded.
