CANCUN, Q. Roo.- The lodging centers of the Mexican Caribbean will have a 90% average occupancy this weekend due to the start of the “Semana Santa” and Easter holidays, which coincides with the last group of springbreakers.

Hotel reservations are up to 90%, and the Cancún and the Riviera Maya area is expecting some 60,000 visitors arriving per day, to enjoy the activities offered by the region.

Travel operators such as Despegar.com and Best Day agree that during Semana Santa the numbers of national tourists will go up in hotels of the beach area, between 40% and 45%.

The Hotel Association of Cancun and Puerto Morelos (AHCyPM) said that last weekend occupancy was between 90% and 92%, and in the following days the percentages of accommodation are expected to be higher.

The overall occupancy rate for Cancun and Puerto Morelos was 86.2%, in hotels in the beach area, while the hotels in the city are 86% on Tuesday March 20.

Best Day foresees an economic spill close to 18.5 million dollars in the area, with an average expenditure of 500 dollars per person. While Despegar.com says Cancun is the beach destination most prefered by national travelers.

The Cancun Airport will be handling between 400 and 600 scheduled operations (arrivals and departures) per day during Semana Santa and Easter Week.
