CANCÚN – On Tuesday August 2 at 6:45 pm, around 100 baby sea turtles were killed as a truck carrying them suddenly overturned. The driver was identified as the environmental conservation coordinator of the Palace Resorts Hotel.

The woman apparently fell asleep at the wheel on Coba Avenue, in Supermanzana 26, in front of Plaza Hollywood, crossing the central median and crashing into the base of a metal pole, overturning and causing the truck to catch fire. Then, she was taken to the Hospital for medical care.

After an exhausting day on the beach carrying baby sea turtles to a safe conservation area, Mildred N, an environmental coordinator, and her companion Alberto N were aboard a white pickup Nissan NP300 with license plates SZ-4165- E, when the accident happened.

The woman lost control of the vehicle, climbing to the central runway of the Coba Avenue, colliding with the base of a metallic street lamp post, causing the Nissan to overturn on its right side, and after skidding several meters away the pickup caught fire, leaving the precious cargo scattered in the street.

As the injured woman realized the truck caught fire, immediately she called 911 emergency number.

Later on, firefighters arrived onsite to control the flames.

Afterwards the driver was taken to the Playa Med Hospital for medical attention, and Alberto was given first aid at the scene.

Transit police officers conducted a security operation and the truck was taken to the car pound.
